A text from Dr Who
Former Dr Who Tom Baker, who found new fame as the saucy narrator for hit TV comedy show "Little Britain", has taken over as the new voice of BT's text service.

Texts sent to and from landline phones can now be delivered as voice messages in Baker's recognisable deep tone for the next three months.

"What appeals to me most is the thought that I will be bringing good news to people whether it is a cheeky message, a birthday greeting or just a quick 'hello,'" Baker said. "Whatever it is, hopefully my voice will bring a smile to people's faces."

It's got to be worth sending "It's the Doctor here; the Daleks are on their way!" to your nearest and nerdiest (hasn't it?).

Do you use Winamp?
Zero-day exploit exposes Winamp users

Winamp has published asecurity update to fix a critical vulnerability in its media player. The move came after a security researcher known only as 'Kozan' discovered a flaw in Winamp 5.12 that could be exploited to compromise users' systems.Proof of concept code was published on Sunday.

Attackers could exploit the flaw through a specially crafted playlist file.On opening the file the flaw results in a buffer overflow, allowing remotehackers to launch applications and take control
of compromised systems.

The vulnerability effectively allows the attacker to turn the computer into azombie system or steal data from the system's hard drive.

Security firm Secunia gave the flaw its most severe security rating of 'extremely critical'.
The free Winamp media player is owned byAOL, and the vulnerability has been confirmed only for version 5.12.

You can download a free update by going to http://www.winamp.com.

Monday. Not much music but some sharp business

Well tonight your choice of entertainment might be limited to whatever you find on the TV or at the video rental shop; apart from the Open Mic Night @ The Westgate in Taunton!

Some off topic news! Watch out for this.
We so nearly got scammed; a company phones up and says would we like to advertise in a local Police crime prevention publication going to 160,000 homes? Sounds interesting we say. How much does it cost? The price seems fair so we go ahead and book the advert. Then the bill arrives in the post, something doen't quite stack up, the company has no web site, the address is actual a mail drop address and most tellingly of all the local Police (Avon & Somerset public relations) have never heard of the company! Alarm bells are ringing.

We then phone the company again; "oh it's actually a diary for sale to the whole Police force across the UK". Order cancelled! If you have dealings with Orbis Publishing of 181 - 183 New Chester Road, New Ferry Wirral then be very, very careful that you are actually getting what you think you are getting.

File sharing bomb shell

Have you used file sharing programs to share music?
We found this on Yahoo, it could be a bit worrying for some of you out there!
Music filesharers ordered to pay fines - By Tim Castle

LONDON (Reuters) - The record industry said on Friday it had won a landmark court case against two people caught illegally swapping music on the Internet, forcing them to pay thousands of pounds in bills.

In the first case of its kind in Britain, London's High Court ruled in separate judgements that the two men were liable for illegal internet distribution of music, the British Phonographic Institute (BPI) said.

"It's the first time our assertion that file sharing is illegal has a BPI spokesman told Reuters.
"These individuals felt they had a case to defend, and the courts ruled that they emphatically don't."

The BPI said it had decided not to name the two men, a postman from Brighton and a man from King's Lynn, who it had taken to court for breaking the Copyright and Patents Act.
The judgements were made earlier this month and in November.

The man from King's Lynn was ordered to make an immediate payment of 5,000 pounds, and faces legal costs of 13,500 pounds and as well as an undecided sum for damages.
The postman, a father of two, was told to pay 1,500 pounds pending a final decision on damages and costs.

Don't sit there!
Firefighters have been ordered by health and safety officers not to sit on new chairs - until they have been warned of the dangers.

Crews, who enter burning buildings for a living, have been told they must be properly instructed by reading a specially prepared four-page manual on the reclining seats before they can be used.
Bosses at Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service decided their staff should get the special instructions at the request of a union health and safety representative.

What next? Don't use that teaspoon until you have had a week of induction training on the danger of poking your eye out?

Have a great day

Watch out; your iPOD might get you mugged!
Street robberies in England and Wales are growing faster than at any time for three years, police figures showed yesterday. The number of muggings rose by 11 per cent in the third quarter of last year and threaten to return to the levels before Tony Blair ordered a crackdown in 2002.

His "street crime initiative" helped to drive down muggings significantly by pouring police into 10 inner city crime hotspots. But since the money for the £80 million scheme dried up last year, the problem has returned. Police chiefs put most of the blame on the attraction of high-tech 3G mobile telephones and iPods.

Yahoo Web Awards
Yahoo has put together a list of the weird, wonderful, great and good web sites that the UK has to offer. If you click the link above it will take you to the Yahoo page. We particularly liked www.liveplasma.com it presents a graphical map on screen based on the band name, Film Director, movie or Actor that you put in. Very Funky! (It works better with well known bands though)

We thought we would introduce a new web link to you each day (or when we think about it!). This one will take you to cameras dotted around the tourist sites of London, including Trafalgar Square and Big Ben.

Do we live in a Police State?
There are those who would argue that we already live in what many describe as a Police state. Others believe we are sleep walking our way into it with the huge increase in the use of CCTV, so called ID cards and now the introduction of numberplate reading cameras on every major road. They know where you are every second of the day.

We spotted this piece by the Gaurdian online and thought you may find it interesting. Click the headline above.

Spam, music & being British

Do you get as pissed of as we do with the amount of spam email messages you receive each day? We don't have an answer and to be honest the Yahoo filters get rid of the junk but why do the spammers assume that my 'equipment' is too small, my bank account in dire need of a lottery win or that I want to change my phone provider (again)?

Come the day of the revolution....

Recently our glorious Chancellor (always with his hand in your pocket) has made lots of noise about what it means to be British. There has been lots of comment on this but we saw this follow on the Telegraph Newspaper web site and thought you might enjoy it!

In an attempt to assist him (Gordon Brown) in his quest, then, here are a few experiences of modern life that might help us define what it means to be a 21st-century
Briton:

• Being sent e-mails that say you have won £341,000 on a lottery you didn't enter, and all you need to do to claim the prize is to forward your bank details.

• Endowment shortfalls.

• Arriving for the 6.45am train, which is delayed until 7.01am and being told by the station customer services manager that bikes are banned from
trains after 7am.

• Yo-yo diets.

• Your MP doing an impression of a randy tom cat on national television.

• Never being more than five miles from a Body Shop branch.

• The entire country grinding to a halt at the first hint of snow. Or sniff of bird flu.

• Receiving an unsolicited call from someone in India calling himself James who says you could be paying nothing for your phone calls from now on.

• Calling back to India a month later on discovery that you are in fact paying three times what you did before only to be informed that James no longer works for the company.

• People saying "yeah, no, no, no, yes" when they just mean "yes". Or "no".

• Learning that the Government spends more on consultants than on sports rovision.
• Perpetual Sofa Kingdom sales that "must end noon Friday".

• Sitting on the bus listening to white youths with Jamaican accents calling each other "blud". That's what I'm saying, innit.

• Wondering who Mark Oaten is. And Chris Huhne.

• Learning Polish to communicate with your plumber. Or hairdresser. Or GP.

• Watching the brilliant political satire The Thick of It and realising that is how most government policy is really made. Including this one.

• Thinking that, in the end, the British are too modest a bunch to start waving flags in annual self-celebration.

Have a very British spam free day!

Wednesday- Local band breaks up!

X-Teller Split!
One of our favourite local bands has announced that they are to split. X-Teller, who many will know from their regular gigging in the area sent us the message below last night.

If you read the last newsletter, we mentioned that X-Teller was moving forward with enthusiasm and dedication. Unknown to half the band this was not the case! Last week a sudden decision was made that the band X-Teller was to dissolve, with two members citing personal reasons as the main factor to leave. The band would like to thank the fans and everyone who has given their support over the last four years for taking them to where they were and would like to apologise for the cancellation of the forthcoming advertised listings. Never fear though! The rhythm section are sticking together and will be back soon with new members, new music and a new website. More details will follow when we have them. X-Teller CD's are still available along with FREE posters at www.roguerockrecords.co.uk

It's a shame but we can only hope from the ashes two new bands will arise.

Today is deadline day for the February edition of Suited and Booted.
Send us your events, adverts, listings, jokes or Valentines messages today! Preferably by email to suit_boot@yahoo.co.uk

Quiet Tuesday-Idiot responses in Oxford

Tuesday Events - There's not much on!

The only event we have for you today is "The Last Laugh" @ The Tacchi-Morris Arts Centre in Taunton playing until the 19th.

Be careful who or what you call Gay

It's a new twist on the idea that the world has gone stark staring bonkers but in Oxford a student from Ulster was arrested for calling a Police officer's horse Gay.

This apprently homophobic remark resulted in two squad cars taking the student away for a severe talking to.

The full story is here.

In the end no charges were brought as there was no 'disorder'.

The story is to me incredible, because I lived in Oxford for a while and I always wondered where the Police were, when violence broke out or shops were broken into. Now the mystery is solved, they were out arresting students for not being sufficiently politically correct.

Here's another politically incorrect word; the Police behaved like IDIOTS!

Have a completely non PC day!

Monday...quiet..iPOD users

Happy Monday

Not much going on today to excite your musical synapses but there is Open Mic Night @ The Westgate in Taunton if you fancy a sing.

Baffled by your iPOD?
Help will soon be at hand for technophobes who don't have a clue how to use their iPods - but at a price.

New tutorials costing £65 for 40 minutes are to be offered at Selfridges' flagship London department store.

The scheme comes in response to queries from customers who are baffled by the best-selling MP3 music players, a spokeswoman said. The one-to-one "iPod Survival" sessions will aim to teach clients everything there is to know about the trendy Apple device. Subjects covered will include general use of the iPod, using iTunes, installing and deleting videos, creating playlists and downloading Podcasts.

Sunday Papers & more.

Sunday is of course the day when many pick up the papers to be astounded by what goes on in the world.

It was reported in the Sunday Times today that a police officer in Nottinghamshire is being investigated for comments he made about a local criminal being questioned in another room. The copper referred to the criminal as "pondlife" (a fairly mild insult we think) and his words were picked up by covert cameras installed at the station for other reasons.

The criminal did not hear the comment but because he may have been offended if he had heard it, the officer is under investigation.

What complete and utter bollocks!

The legion forces of the politically correct have once agin truimphed over British common sense! It is time this stupidity was brought to an end.

What about some music?

Friday 13th!!

It's Friday 13th!

Aaargh, cross everything as today is Friday 13th and of course this is the day when things traditionally go wrong. But what about a change? What if today things go wrong in your favour? The Inland Revenue could mistakenly send you a cheque for £1000, you may get upgraded on your holiday booking or your car gets a full service instead of just an oil change because the mechanic makes a mistake? It could happen!

Rather be famous than brainy?

We saw this on Yahoo

LONDON (Reuters) - Dazzled by the attractions of fame, more than one in 10 young Britons would quit school to become tomorrow's tabloid star, a survey showed on Friday.
In a country obsessed by celebrities, a growing number of children are more interested in becoming rich and famous than getting a good education, according to research from the Learning and Skills Council (LSC).

Around nine percent thought fame was a great way to earn money without skills or qualifications.

"Young people realise that you don't need skills for being famous and believe it is easy, which it is not," Max Clifford, the country's best known publicist, told Reuters.

Tabloids are littered with "revelations" about C-list celebrities and the country's most famous couple, David and Victoria Beckham, have made millions of pounds from gracing the front pages.

But the LSC pointed out that the chances of being picked for a Big Brother-style TV show and being popular afterwards were around one in 30 million, longer odds than winning the lottery. Clifford, who has acted as agent for many fleeting celebrities, agreed.

"I would say to star-wannabes: See it as the lottery, try it but don't count on it, don't rely on it. "Get yourself educated, get yourself a job, get yourself a situation."

On the other hand maybe, just maybe, teenagers are wondering what the point of going to Uni is when you end up thousands of pounds in debt and still only manage to get a job flipping burgers. Just a thought.

Spooky Man 'sucked into grave'
A man is suing New York church officials claiming he was sucked into his brother-in-law's grave while tending the plot in a scene reminiscent of a horror movie.

Gerard Glock, 39, of Flatbush, Brooklyn, said he was trimming weeds at St Charles Cemetery in Farmingdale, Long Island, when the earth collapsed under his feet and he found himself waist-deep in Charles Rizzo's grave.

"I just fell right into his grave," Mr Glock told the New York Daily News, adding that his wife, daughter and mother-in-law were watching in shock. "It was exactly out of a horror movie," he said. "It was like being buried alive. My daughter was hysterical, crying. My wife was in shock."

Jazz this Saturday in Sherborne
On Saturday 14th January, the Liane Carroll Trio play at Sherborne Jazz Club. (At the Plume of Feathers)

They say;

We are really looking forward to bringing you yet another award-winning jazz event: a performance by the red hot singer and pianist Liane Carroll and her trio. Not only a regular favourite at Sherborne Jazz Club, Liane was a double winner at this year's BBC Jazz Awards.Liane is one of the most stylistically flexible pianists around, with a marvellous, slightly husky singing voice. She is enjoying considerable success with her brand of joyful, soul-infused jazz and her wicked sense of humour, and is much in demand, not least by Ronnie Scott's in London where she appears regularly.Described by Time Out as "Utterley brilliant", "The real thing" by The Independent on Sunday, and even "Highly recommended" by Michael Parkinson, Liane is one of the finest, most exciting jazz singers in the UK today, and always draws a capacity crowd on her visits to Sherborne. You are guaranteed great music from Liane who is a very fine pianist, a supreme vocal talent and last, and by no means least, fun!Tickets are £12 for non-members, £10 for members and £7 for students (with ID), and are available from Sherborne Tourist Information Office in Digby Road, Sherborne or by phoning them on 01935 815341. Hot News for '80s refugees! Howard Jones To Play Taunton

Yes … THE Howard Jones … is playing an acoustic gig in his new home town, at Somerset College Atrium, Wellington Road, on Friday February 17th.

Those people who grew up in the 80s will need no reminding that Howard scored top ten hits with ‘What Is Love?’, ‘Like To Get To Know You Well’, ‘Things Can Only Get Better’ and ‘No One Is To Blame’, which also reached number 1 in the US. His album: ‘Dream Into Action’ was in the American Top 20 for almost a year and his success spread across the world. At the end of the 80s he played major tours in the US, headlining Madison Square Garden and the Forum in LA. His ‘Best Of’ album was released in 1993, taking his worldwide album sales to over 8 million.

Howard’s career has carried on since that time. He has toured with Ringo Starr and played with the likes of Greg Lake and Midge Ure. He toured the States again in 2004 and did a special one off acoustic concert with Jackson Browne in 2005.

Now, in between touring the US and Europe early in 2006, Howard is playing his only gig in the west country, in Taunton. This is your chance to see him in an intimate setting in an audience of only 300. Tickets for the concert are £15 and can be obtained from Somerset College Main Reception, or from Andy Lock on 01278 723389 / 07723 331436 – email andylock75@hotmail.com

Friday at last!
And if you follow the political news then you will know that Charles Kennedy, leader of the Lib Dems has finally come clean about his booze problems. It looked like he had the hangover from hell when he last presented at the Lib Dem conference. At the time it was described as flu...oh yeh, we really did believe you!

Fancy yourself as a busker?
Buskers will be made to perform in an X-Factor style audition before being allowed to perform in a city centre.

Bosses at Nottingham City Council decided to introduce the elimination process in an attempt to improve the quality of street entertainment in the main square.

Budding performers will have to prove their talent in front of a panel of judges before being issued with a special permit that allows them to busk in one of six designated spots.

Cat phones police - So they are useful after all!
Police aren't sure how else to explain it. But when an officer walked into an apartment in answer to an emergency call, an orange-and-tan striped cat was lying by a telephone on the living room floor. The cat's owner, Gary Rosheisen, was on the ground near his bed having fallen out of his wheelchair.

Rosheisen said his cat, Tommy, must have hit the right buttons to make the emergency call.
Rosheisen said he could not get up because of pain from osteoporosis and ministrokes that disrupted his balance. He also was not wearing his medical-alert necklace and could not reach a an emergency warning cord above his pillow.

Messy claim
A man who tried to sue the council after soiling his own trousers has made it on to a list of the most spurious compensation claims.

The man blamed the embarrassing accident on the council's decision to close a public lavatory at the bus station, and claimed he was owed the cost of a new pair of trousers.

The bizarre claim was among thousands of public liability claims which cost local government and insurance firms an estimated £250 million annually. Leading public sector insurer Zurich Municipal said many claimants were genuine, but exaggerated and spurious claims were an increasing problem.

It's Tuesday; back to work day for many of you out there and that might be a bit of a shock to the system judging by the phone calls we had so far today!

Suffice to say that we are not all firing on all cylinders this morning!

Live entertainment is a bit lacking as well, we have no live music listed for today in the West Dorset and South Somerset areas.

Events today in Taunton & Bridgwater areas
Tiverton Folk Club @ The Racehorse Inn, Tiverton
Rockin' On Heavens Door @ The Brewhouse Theatre, Taunton (until 7th)

It's 'sod's law' for 98% of Britons

Apparently Sod's Law is alive and well in modern Britain (if that's not an oxymoron!).

Around 98% of Britons say they have been hit by 'sod's law' at some point, with a third claiming to have experienced it during the past week, research has showed.

Nearly half of people who claimed they had been victim of sod's law said the electricity had gone off just as they were about to watch their favourite programme, while 29% were about to cook a special meal when the cooker broke.

More than one in three people said their boiler had broken down on a really cold day and 21% said they had been locked out of their house during cold weather, according to insurer Direct Line.

Of course if you maintain your car and oil the locks now and again the bloody things would work wouldn't they?

Top Single of 2005 was...
Tony Christie's (Is This The Way To) Amarillo was the best-selling single of 2005, according to Radio 1. Christie spent seven weeks at number one with the million-selling charity song, which featured comic Peter Kay.

It beat the Christmas number one That's My Goal - rushed into production after Shayne Ward was proclaimed the winner of the X factor - into second place.

Have a fun day.

Welcome to 2006!

Well, how is the hangover? Recovered?

2006, a brand new year and no doubt you have given yourself some resolutions to go with it. Well so have we!

This year we aim to be: bigger, better, more inclusive and retain that sense of fun...we hope you approve!

Now, as far as we can tell there no live events today except for the open mic night at the Westgate in Taunton to keep your musical bones happy.

Tomorrow (Tuesday) the picking are rather slim as well.
